CO2 CAPTURE
The ROCKDACS IoT system has been granted by Vinnova, under the Innovative Impact Startups 2023 program. The project focuses on measuring mass transfer and CO2 uptake of alkaline by-products in actual industrial settings.
This IoT system delivers continuous real-time data at a low cost and requires minimal maintenance. Consequently, it addresses a knowledge gap in CO2 uptake measurement for stored by-products and ongoing production, providing valuable data for feasibility studies, material handling, product development, and carbon management.
The project aims to gather data showcasing the impact of improved material organization on increased CO2 uptake, targeting a key outcome of achieving 50% carbonation of theoretical uptake within 7 months. Accurate CO2 uptake measurement contributes to MRV and is crucial for advancing technological development and scaling, unlocking the gigaton potential of carbon mineralization. This impact area remains relatively unexplored, especially in industrial conditions compared to laboratory studies

”Continuous measurement is important to us so we can perform measurements in real conditions. We have to account for CO2 from the production of our main product, iron powder. It is therefore very important to demonstrate CO2 management. We see a good use of carbonated slag... Sponge iron slag can be used as filler in concrete and bearing layers in road construction. There is no one big cost change in slag.”

”We run 24–7 production, so continuous measurement is good to see, CO2 uptake and when the material is saturated. Carbonation is desirable, CO2 can be tied up .e.g from mine tailings. Research is ongoing on this very matter. Some other methods we are currently evaluating are CO2 electrolysis, use of hydrogen in production, and CCS (Carbon Capture Storage) facilities.”

”Some projects have started in Carbonation, No measurement at the moment on site. An IoT measurement system could help with this. Swerock works a lot to reduce emissions from concrete production and uses granulated slag from the steel industry instead of cement.”
