PASSIVE DAC
Chalmers University, Gothenburg University, Nordic DAC Group, Höganäs, Boliden, Klimpo, and Torkapparater are collaborating to develop and implement innovative passive mineral carbonation systems using low-value alkaline by-products. The project has been granted a total budget of 14 million SEK by the Swedish Energy Agency from January 2023 to January 2027.

The main objective is to create a low-cost process to capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere for negative emissions. The team aims to determine the optimized carbonation rates and process conditions for various pure and treated materials and by-products. The project will also conduct a life cycle analysis (LCA) and a techno-economic assessment.

Nordic DAC Group will coordinate the exploitation of material uses and valorization. Moreover, implement a strategy for scale-up based on market analysis and stakeholder interaction. By the project's fourth year, the team plans to develop prototypes and demonstrate the passive-DAC system at the industrial sites of Boliden and Höganäs.

Kick-off meeting, February 23rd, 2023 at Chalmers University in Gothenburg, Sweden.
